Many southerners have heard of our Alaskan King crabs that are harvested in the northern reaches of the Bering Sea. However, in Southeast Alaska Dungeness crabs are the ones producing clouds of steam at the table. Dungeness crab is much like the blue crab found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Succulent ‘Dungies’ are just as sweet, but much meatier. Large mature males are sustainably caught in the deltas of thousands of Alaskan rivers and streams; they are readily accessible and delicious table fare. Locals have a deep-rooted connection to steaming pots of Dungies; they are simply one of the most prized regional foods.
